Solfeggio frequencies
Nine tones, from 174 Hz to 963 Hz, each linked to a promised effect. Tap any row to hear it; open a tone for the claims, the evidence and a player with beats and timer.

Where the solfeggio numbers really come from
The modern solfeggio list traces to Joseph Puleo and Leonard Horowitz in the 1990s, who derived the numbers by digit-reduction of verse numbers in the Book of Numbers. It is not the medieval scale Guido d’Arezzo taught with the hymn “Ut queant laxis”, which named pitches, not fixed frequencies.
There’s a tidy piece of arithmetic behind the list: every core tone’s digits add up to 3, 6 or 9 (3+9+6 = 18 → 9; 5+2+8 = 15 → 6). That pattern is how the numbers were chosen, which is why it can’t be taken as evidence of anything deeper.
What science says
Research is sparse. The most-cited paper, a 2018 pilot by Akimoto and colleagues, measured stress markers in nine people after 528 Hz-tuned music. No large controlled trial has tested any solfeggio frequency against an ordinary tone. So enjoy them as sound, and be sceptical of any product claiming they heal.
How people use them
- As a quiet drone during meditation or yoga, often ten to twenty minutes of one tone.
- As the carrier for a slow binaural beat: play 528 Hz in the studio with a 6 or 10 Hz beat.
- Paired with the chakra chart on the healing frequencies page.
Questions people ask
What are the 9 solfeggio frequencies?
174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz. The six “core” tones (396 to 852 Hz) carry the syllables UT, RE, MI, FA, SOL and LA; 174, 285 and 963 Hz were added later.
Are solfeggio frequencies ancient?
No. The frequency list dates from the 1990s (Joseph Puleo, popularised by Leonard Horowitz). Medieval solfège named notes of a scale, not fixed frequencies, and pitch standards didn’t exist then.
Which solfeggio frequency is best?
There is no evidence that any is better. 528 Hz is the most popular. Choose the one whose pitch you find most comfortable.
What is God’s frequency in Hz?
963 Hz is the tone most often called the “God frequency”, because solfeggio charts map it to the crown chakra. The label is spiritual marketing, not a scientific property.
Is it good to listen to solfeggio frequencies?
At a comfortable volume it’s harmless, and many people find a steady tone helps them settle into meditation. Just don’t rely on it in place of medical care.
How long should you listen to solfeggio frequencies?
There’s no evidence-based dose. Ten to twenty minutes of one tone, or one to two minutes per tone when cycling through all nine, is typical.
Do solfeggio frequencies work?
Specific healing claims are unsupported. A handful of small pilot studies exist (mostly on 528 Hz). As calm, steady sound for meditation they are as useful as any gentle tone.
