On its own a 528 Hz sine is bright. Many listeners prefer it quieter with pink noise under it, or as the carrier of a gentle alpha binaural beat.

What 528 Hz is claimed to do

  • Claimed to “repair DNA”, the best-known and least supported claim
  • Promoted for stress relief and a sense of warmth
  • Mapped to the solar plexus or heart chakra depending on the chart

What the evidence says

The DNA claim has no scientific basis. The research that exists is small: a 2018 pilot by Akimoto and colleagues (Health, Scientific Research Publishing) with nine volunteers reported lower cortisol after music tuned to 528 Hz compared with 440 Hz, and several rodent studies report stress-marker changes. None are large, blinded human trials. It is reasonable to use 528 Hz because you like it; not to expect it to heal anything.

Where the number comes from

The modern solfeggio list traces to Joseph Puleo and Leonard Horowitz in the 1990s, who derived the numbers by digit-reduction of verse numbers in the Book of Numbers. It is not the medieval scale Guido d’Arezzo taught with the hymn “Ut queant laxis”, which named pitches, not fixed frequencies.

528 Hz: common questions

Does 528 Hz repair DNA?

No. That claim comes from the solfeggio literature, not from any laboratory evidence. Sound at listening volume cannot alter DNA.

What is 528 Hz good for?

A small 2018 pilot found lower stress markers after 528 Hz-tuned music. That is a weak signal; the honest answer is relaxation, if you find it pleasant.

What note is 528 Hz?

Just above C5 (523.3 Hz), about 16 cents sharp. In the scientific C = 256 Hz tuning it would be very close to C5 (512 Hz is C5 there).

How long should I listen to 528 Hz?

There is no evidence-based duration. Ten to twenty minutes is typical for a meditation; stop if it becomes irritating.
