Theta waves (4–8 Hz)

Theta waves run at 4 to 8 cycles per second. In adults they show up as you drift off, in light N1 sleep, and in some experienced meditators. Theta in the hippocampus is also linked to memory and navigation in animal studies.

Theta binaural beats: what to expect

A 2023 systematic review in PLOS ONE (Ingendoh et al.) found binaural-beat studies inconsistent: some show EEG entrainment, many do not. Theta beats are a reasonable relaxation sound; claims of instant “theta states” or learning boosts go beyond the data.

The player is set to a 6 Hz binaural beat. Headphones on for binaural mode; keep it quiet, and give it at least ten minutes.

Slower waves are larger because big populations of neurons fire in step; faster rhythms are smaller and more local. On a real EEG the trace is a mixture of all bands at once, and a "state" just means one band dominates.

Theta waves: common questions

What do theta waves do?

They are a signature of drowsiness and light sleep, and in the hippocampus they help coordinate memory processing.

How do I listen to theta binaural beats?

Wear stereo headphones, pick a carrier around 150–250 Hz and a 6 Hz difference, and keep the volume low for 15–30 minutes.

Are theta waves good for sleep?

Theta appears as you fall asleep, so theta beats are often used at bedtime. Whether the beat causes sleepiness is not established.
